I haven’t done anything with even a remotely religious, which is something I like to do every once in a while. And it has been a while. The name went through a couple of permutations before I settled on Morning Star.
This one’s started out with lukewarm enthusiasm- something more of a sketch to play out an idea of my head. Then, I took a night off of staring at the crazy looking face and the constant balking at the thought of rendering wings and feathers again. Shudder. The next night, everything seemed to click into place.
Current time spent on this one is about 4-5 hours tops, but fatigue in my wrists and the general distraction that is the internet makes it net about 3-4 hours.
Enter the initial black and white.

- Black and white rendering
It didn’t look like this right out. I fiddle faddle alot with the pauldrons on her shoulders. Nor did those side plates exist to provide protection to the breasts. Much like it would protect much, really. Eyes are way creepy, and I don’t know what exactly I’m going for in the expression.

Underpainting
The color also started slow until I took the night off and let it rest. However, the wings are where I want them to be at the moment. I’ll hunker down and deal with the feathers and filaments later. Right now, it looks ok. The skin’s also now where I want it, slightly pallid but not dead.
What’s going to be between her hands? I’m not sure. I need to go research that some more.

Close up
Now that I’m doing the real painting part, it’s coming together. She’s got lips, but her eyes are too linear to get the expression I want, which I am also figuring out what it needs to be. Also, the armor’s coming in steadily. Frank Frazetta’s work was a great starting point on how to paint armor. His Death Dealer is a wonderul piece to look at and get lost in. There’s many many details to find and pick out.
All in all, this one is slowly and steadily coming into its own. It’s a trying piece for me because of the armor and feathers, which I haven’t done in a while.
